Customer satisfaction is a driver for excellence throughout our practice. It’s achieved by adopting a proactive approach to professional support and quality service delivered by a dynamic team committed to ‘change for good’. Financial knowhow and business expertise coupled with a ‘can do’ attitude ensure that our clients receive a personal service tailored to their needs.
We encourage our team to think outside the box, advocating success through teamwork, and it’s why we invest heavily in training. As an ACCA Platinum Status Approved Employer, Howards is committed to helping staff achieve their full potential.
During annual appraisals we set objectives and identify development needs and then provide generous study support and structured training for ACCA, AAT and CIPP payroll qualifications.
Our study leave package is proven to give our trainees the best chance of success. Meanwhile, ongoing in-house training enables staff to update their knowledge in accountancy, audit and taxation. Each student is mentored by a member of our senior management team and can turn to qualified, experienced colleagues for advice and moral support when the going gets tough. Howards pays all examination and training fees along with professional membership subscriptions.
As well as investing to train the next generation of accountants we implement initiatives to support accounting industry developments and changes in legislation, such as Making Tax Digital, data protection and anti-money laundering.
Howards invests around £60,000 annually in professional training and tailored courses that meet CPD requirements but, more importantly, ensure integrity and the highest standards of professional conduct at all times. Everyone benefits from a company culture that ensures any grey areas or suspicious activity is automatically reported to senior management for investigation and possible action.
As one of the largest independent accountancy firms in the area, Howards offers competitive salaries and an exciting benefits package:
23 days annual leave entitlement plus Bank Holidays
Extra day of holiday on the employee’s birthday
Extra holiday at Christmas
An extra 5 days of annual leave after 10 years’ service
A annual performance-related bonus
An annual pay review
An annual staff appraisal
Our employees work flexible hours and enjoy 2 ‘duvet days’ each year as well as dress-down Fridays.
Howards is very much a team-orientated business. We focus on rewarding achievement and when opportunities arise we always aim to promote from within our ranks. Several of our employees started out as trainees in the businesses and have progressed into responsible management positions.
The strong work ethic at Howards is matched by a sense of fun. Every year we organise a variety of social activities, often with a charity connection. Events range from bowling evenings, a day at the races and cake bakes to coffee mornings in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. We’re always open to ideas – a Christmas Jumper Day raised much-needed funds for Prostate Cancer UK.
“The study for the [SBR] module was quite intense, however as Howards has joined the Level 7 Apprenticeship offered by the government through Kaplan, I was able to benefit from additional online revision sessions which helped me massively. It also helps to have so many experienced members of staff in the office to bounce questions off from day-to-day when you are stuck.”
“I found studying for the exams quite hard, especially when trying to balance having a social life! Having a lot of staff at Howards to ask for support really helped and reduced some of the stresses of studying. Howards also offers a generous study leave package, which helped a lot. Having an ACCA qualification has already helped me to develop my accounting skills day-to-day and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.”
“Studying for the exam was difficult at times to find the motivation, especially finding enough time after work and at weekends! Howard’s gave us time off in order to take the course over five days and then a further two days for studying and the exam.”
“Studying for the exams took a lot of hard work but Howards gave me the time and support to enable me to pass. By passing the advanced tax exam I feel more confident about advising clients in more complex areas.”
“Studying for the exam takes a lot of dedication and is a big commitment in terms of time and pressures. Howards provides the financial assistance, the training and the time off to allow for study and revision. Studying ACCA provides greater knowledge in a variety of areas of accountancy and will provide a recognised qualification that will, all being well, be lifelong.”

The quality of our service to clients underpins the long-term profitability of our business and, ultimately, we couldn’t deliver these high standards without the support of our team.
